IVY Does Conan O'Brien!
In yet further IVY excitement, Adam now reports that the band will appear on Late Night With Conan O'Brien on NBC this December 28. Adam's projecting they'll play "Disappointed."

New IVY Project (Tentative!)
IVY fans will be overjoyed to learn that the band are planning to go back into the studio soon for a quickie release (that is, sometime early next year, prior to a late-winter/early-spring tour) of an album of cover versions. Planned for inclusion are five (or so) covers already done and released in various forms, including "Digging Your Scene," "I Guess I'm Just A Little Too Sensitive" and "Be My Baby." According to Andy, they're considering which other songs will round out the record (which has been "penciled" in but not confirmed for financing from Nettwerk). Favorites thus far include Prefab Sprout's "Bonny" and a Go Betweens tune. More info as it becomes available!

And in non-news related events, the members of IVY and your webmistress wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Here's to 2002!

"Edge Of The Ocean" Rumors Put To Rest:
According to Nettwerk, "Edge of the Ocean" was not released as a commercial CD single in stores -- it was only sent to radio as a remix, in September. There is a 10" vinyl in some "hipster" stores, but the quantities were very small, perhaps 1,000.

The remixed version of "Edge" will be available commercially, however, on the soundtrack to Roswell, which will be in stores on February 26.

Currently, IVY are not touring, and are back at home for the holidays. Andy has more or less wrapped up work on a solo record. More on that as it becomes available!

Question: Why aren't IVY on the Shallow Hal soundtrack?
Andy replies: "We're not on the Shallow Hal soundtrack bec, at the time, only "Edge Of TO" was in the film. And we had licensed it already to be released on the Roswell soundtrack (coming out in Jan), which we thought was better for us anyway, to spread ourselves out. Neither wanted it on their soundtrack if it was on the other's as well...so it had to be 'exclusive.' We had to pick which one. The movie trailer for Shallow Hal was made months before much of the film's music was decided on so that's why there's no familiar music in the trailer."

So, get that, kids: No Shallow Hal soundtrack purchase! Purchase Roswell soundtrack (in January 2002) instead!

october 2001

Not much new to report at the moment, except that IVY have been hard at work touring and working on the Shallow Hal soundtrack. For those coming to the live dates, here's the skinny on their tour drummer and tour guitarist:

Marty Beller plays the drums, and has previously worked with The Negro Problem, Vitamin C and They Might Be Giants; Josh Lattanzi plays guitar, and has previously worked alongside Julianna Hatfield, Nina Gordon.

Thank you for your attention.

By the way, the Long Distance T-Shirts are back!

Hooray! IVY has been asked to score the new Farrelly Brothers film (they did, among others, There's Something About Mary, which featured an IVY track), called Shallow Hal. (Apparently the coincidence that IVY has a song called "Shallow" is no coincidence at all -- that they have a song by that name helped get them the offer. The film stars Gwenyth Paltrow and Jack Black (of Tenacious D) and is scheduled for a November release. The only downside: Because of the score, IVY will rearrange their fall tour schedule so they can work on the film.

Tentative tour dates still will include:

Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles (end of September)
New York, D.C., Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Minneapolis (end of October)
A full North American tour (early 2002).

Missed IVY on KCRW (July 13, 2001)?  Listen to it here!

IVY Update, Mid-July 2001
Those of you coming in late to the game -- yes, that was IVY you heard on TNT's show Witchblade -- and on NBC's Mysterious Ways. Witchblade featured "Undertow," while Mysterious Ways played "Edge of the Ocean." Both can be found on IVY 's newest CD, Long Distance. By the way -- the rest of the album is even more fab!

Thanks to NPR for mentioning us on Morning Edition this past Saturday, July 7! Not only did  IVY and the new record get a nice plug, but so did this website. Hear the archived show by clicking here. (The IVY bit comes in at 3:59.)

Some comments from fans upon seeing IVY live for the first time in years:

"Quite simply, they kicked ass.  Of the three times I've seen them, this was easily the best; they seem to have a great deal more confidence in their abilities then they did previously.  The show lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes, they did two encores, and after the show, Andy, Adam, and the new drummer (the birthday boy did a great job) sold CD's and the new LD t-shirt from the stage (which was kinda chaotic)."

Rumors and Whispers: A stage musical of That Thing You Do! (the titular song for that movie was written by IVY 's Adam Schlesinger and even got nominated for an Oscar); a 10" version of "Edge Of The Ocean" may be available soon in very limited quantities.

may 2001

First communique from Nettwerk came today -- a burned-CD copy of the American version of "Long Distance". The release date for LD, according to Nettwerk is July 10, and the songs on the burned CD they sent me go like this:

  1. Undertow
  2. Disappointed
  3. Edge of the ocean
  4. Blame it on yourself
  5. While we're in love
  6. Lucy doesn't love you
  7. Worry about you
  8. Let's stay inside
  9. Midnight sun
  10. I think of you
  11. Hideaway
  12. One more last kiss
The press release refers to the Blow Monkeys cover, but it wasn't on my burned copy that was sent. So keep fingers crossed. Additionally, the press release notes "IVY plans to tour in the US and Europe in support of Long Distance beginning this summer." The release (and Andy confirmed this to me) also notes that Andy's studio Stratosphere has re-opened in a new location in Manhattan.

Starved for some live IVY ?

If you're in Kentucky, you're in luck! IVY will play a semi-acoustic, unplugged show in Louisville on Friday, May 11 at 9:30pm at Hitliners Music Hall (1386 Lexington Road). Says Andy, "We're starting to do stuff like this to get warmed up and it's part of Nettwerk's promotional plan." Give Hitliners a call for further details.

march 2001

A note from Andy, further explaining some details:
Hi Everyone,

Since some people are asking, I'll elaborate a bit more on some things here:
Paco is a "sideproject" of me & Dominique's. My good and very talented friend Michael Hampton was working on writing background music for a television show. (When I am about to start work on a new project, it's Michael who supplies me with most of the loops I use.) He was doing it with Gary Maurer who, along with being a close friend of mine, is the main engineer at my recording studio and has recorded lots of cool albums for people like Fountains Of Wayne & Luna.

I used to walk into the room and make my "producer" comments, like "Man, if you guys wrote some melodies and words to this stuff, and fixed it all up a bit, it could be really cool to release as REAL music...not just for TV". After their TV gig was over they encouraged me to join in so, I eventually took the helm since Gary was also sick of staring at a computer all day. I spent a lot of time straightening out the beats, adding more loops and some guitars, creating the arrangements, and just basically taking it from where they had left off - which was already from a pretty cool place. With the exception of one song, I came up with most of the melodies and lyrics, though Michael and even Gary and Dominique had their share of contributions on everything. It seemed obvious, since Dominique was always around during this period, that she should be the one to sing on it.

We didn't think about IVY at all. It was just four friends working at our apt (where there's a small studio set up), hanging out, eating dinners together. It was fun. But because it was done casually and between all the other stuff going on in our lives, it took a LONG time. So we just decided to release the 5 songs we had done, and not wait to finish the rest. Our plan is to do more. Hopefully this summer, before Long Distance comes out.
Long Distance is being released worldwide by Nettwerk this August. We will most likely be touring starting in September.

I hope this answers some questions for people.

Take care.
Sincerely,

--Andy Chase

february 2001

Well, it's official! IVY have a new home at Nettwerk, having signed to release Long Distance on the same label that has given voice to Sara McLachlan and Coldplay, for starters. According to Andy, "We're hoping to release Long Distance world-wide in early summer. We are going to Japan to tour this April and then will be touring the U.S. this summer and fall." More news as it happens!

january 2004

Thanks to the generosity of Andy, Dominique and Adam, IVY 's third full-length album was distributed free of charge (well, almost) to members of The IVY Vine. Although it isn't being handed out any more, just keep in mind -- there are always benefits to membership! Meanwhile, for those who want to know what they're missing (visually speaking), here's pictures of the fold-out cardboard gatesleeve from the Japanese album:

IVY Update, August 2000

Tentative News Update (still awaiting confirmation): IVY 's new album will be coming out in Japan in early November. So far, they haven't settled on a title. Additionally, IVY will be heading out on a two week tour with Tahiti 80 in Japan in late October to promote the release. There is some discussion of the album's coming out in other countries, including the U.S. but don't look for that to happen until February of next year.

IVY Update, July 2000

Andy will be off in Japan for several weeks, producing (a local songstress), hanging out with Tahiti 80 (who are huge there) and having a few ... business meetings. Next, though it isn't available on release yet, here's the song listing for (working title) Long Distance, IVY 's third full-length release:

Undertow
Disappointed
Edge of the ocean
Blame it on yourself
While we're in love
Lucy doesn't love you
Worry about you
Let's stay inside
Midnight sun
I think of you
Hideaway
One more last kiss

The band also has a remake of the Blow Monkeys' "Digging Your Scene" they want to add, and since Andy sez 13 songs is unlucky, so they'll be pulling one from that lineup.

Finally, Andy and Dom have been working on a "fun diversion" from IVY called Paco with some friends. Dom sings, and it's very different from IVY -- more muzak-y, but in a good way -- and, says Andy, "is not in any way some new venture intended to replace IVY ."

IVY Update, May 2000

Well, finally, it can be told: IVY are off of Sony 550 -- and managed to get free of their corporate stranglehold with their album intact! What that means is that yes, there is a new IVY album, but no, as of now there is no distributor for it, since IVY are label-less. Now, freed with a great record behind them, we can hopefully look forward to a free and clear path to success, on IVY 's terms!

IVY /FOW Update, March 2000

IVY 's album is pretty much complete ... but won't be available right away, due to negotiations with Sony 550 -- the band is preparing to leave the label. More info, however, as it becomes available! And, for those who didn't know, Fountains of Wayne have been let go from Atlantic Records. Things are tough all over!

IVY Update, July 1999

Fabulous news!

Who: Justine Chase Goldberg
What: The littlest IVY -- Dom and Andy's first child!
Where: NYC - and HERE!
When: July 23, 1999 at 9:30pm
Vital Stats: 6 lbs, 3oz ; 20 inches

If you'd like to send a card to Andy and Dom, write me and I'll forward it along. Congratulations to the proud parents!

FOW Update, April 1999

Fountains of Wayne's second album will be out April 13, 1999 on Atlantic Records. The publicity from Atlantic reads (in part):

"You've got to admire a band that can utilize guitar sounds that are straight out of the '70s and combine them with lyrics like "...now I look a little bit more like that guy from Korn..." Not to mention the fab little Shaft-like keyboard sound in the title track. And, of course, Chris and Adam's voices still harmonize in that perfect Beach Boy way. As on their first release, there are so many little pop references -- you'll need to start on your excavation site. It's the perfect past time for rock critics."

Adam's getting married in late January! Write to me to find out how to send a congratulatory card!
Andy's recording studio The Place is closing down -- to be replaced by Stratosphere, which will be owned by Andy, Adam, and James Iha!

IVY Update, October 1998

IVY 's second album, Apartment Life, was originally released on October 7, 1997, a little over two years after the band's beauteous Realistic . After IVY were unceremoniously (and thankfully, if you talk to the fans) dropped from Atlantic records, Sony550, displaying both brains and talent, picked them up and re-released the album with some remixes on October 6, 1998. You may have heard IVY songs in both Something About Mary ("This Is The Day," the first single from the new Sony550 release) and on the WB show Felicity. Other Apartment Life treats: IVY worked with James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and members of Luna.
